Let's Talk Cancer (TEENS EVENT)

Samsung KX, Kings Cross, London

"The event was great to meet new people and hear more about things that the doctors don’t really mention much. It was reassuring hearing some of the advice and it has validated my experiences and struggles."

35 young people,  friends and family, joined us from all over the UK for our first ever 'Lets Talk Cancer (and everything inbetween...)'. Hosted at the impressive Samsung KX venue, this was an inspiring event where young people had the chance to listen, share and relate. It truly was a place where the cancer conversation was really understood.

Our amazing host, Rian ('The 'L' Card'), started off the event with a game of hands up, hands down. Rian started off with some lighthearted questions, asking young people to raise their hand if they had arrived by train, or if they preferred tea over coffee (this proved to be a very controversial topic!). He then moved towards some cancer related questions : Have you ever experienced anxiety around upcoming scans? Have you ever been told that you had a 'good cancer'? Have you ever felt alone during your cancer journey? This questions allowed the entire audience to get involved, realise that they could all relate to one another, and begin to feel a little more comfortable to ask questions, knowing that everyone attending really did 'just get it'

5 young people supported by Teens Unite, including some of our wonderful teen ambassadors, formed our 'teens panel'. They shared their own experiences, offered advice and gave insight into their personal cancer journeys. Young people had the opportunity to ask questions of their own, either anonymously via an online form or directly to the panel, on a variety of topics. Questions ranged from scan anxiety to friendships to worries about education - no topic was off the table!

In true Teens Unite style, we had a break where the young people and their guests could enjpoy a delicious buffet and also have the chance to chat to one another, and get to know one enother better.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our host Rian, our wonderful panel, and also to everyone who attended for being so open and honest. It was an incredibly inspiring evening and we can't wait to host this event again.

By taking part, everyone was able to:

  • Listen, share and relate
  • Interact and socialise with others who get what they're going through
  • Reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness
  • Ask questions to other young people in a similar situation
  • Feel a sense of community and a part of the Teens Unite family
