Chelsea Foundation Football Event (TEENS EVENT)

Cobham Training Ground, 64 Stoke Rd, Stoke D'Abernon, Cobham KT11 3PT

"It helped me feel more positive about myself"

On this Sunday in May we travelled to Chelsea FC’s training ground to take part in a training session led by Staff from the Chelsea Football Club Foundation. The session began with a few icebreakers to get everyone warmed up, the young people had to dribble a ball either right or left depending on the options presented; Messi or Ronaldo? McDonald’s or KFC? Chelsea or Arsenal? I think McDonald’s beat KFC in an almost clean sweep!

As this event fell during mental health week the young people were then asked to dribble to a cone that represented a specific mental health challenge. In their groups they discussed this challenge and gave an example of how to best combat it.
Then, the football began! Everyone was split into groups and took part in a different skills session. From volleying drills to passing challenges to shooting exercises, each young person got to really test and improve their footballing ability during this part of the session.

The session ended with a good ole fashioned match! This allowed everyone to put into practice everything they’d learnt from the previous drills and exercises… We even saw one Bicycle Kick that narrowly missed the target!
This event was a great way for our young people to meet and interact with others their age who have been diagnosed with cancer, through a shared love of football.

A MASSIVE Thank You to the Chelsea Foundation for hosting a truly amazing event, the day really showcased how football can have a positive impact on a young person diagnosed with cancer. We look forward to continuing this partnership in the future!

By being a part of this event, everyone was able to:
•    Reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness
•    Interact and socialise with others of a similar age
•    Take on a new, physical challenge
•    Feel a sense of achievement, improving self-confidence and self-esteem
