Lights, Camera, Action!

Wormley and Turnford Big Local (WTBL) Community Development Manager, Michal, contacted us in January with a fantastic opportunity for young people in the community.

The W&TBL were kicking off a project to create a short film addressing the issues of youth engagement and were looking for a group of young people to take part.  Throughout, the young people would get to work with a team of professionals from MUSTR who would teach them how to create short films, by learning how to write an inspiring story, interview contributors, learn how to use a camera and sound equipment, and learn editing and production skills.

We really liked the idea of the project. We saw synergy with the outcomes that we have for our own Positive Steps workshops and activities –

Increasing self-esteem

Increasing confidence

Creating a sense of belonging

We thought that local Teen, Sam, would be a perfect fit with the project.  We first met Sam when he was on treatment.  We delivered him a bike that we had been gifted, to help him to rebuild his strength.  And, in one of our meetings with Sam, he talked about his career aspirations and expressed an interest in pursuing a career in film.

Despite being still on treatment, Sam attended every one of the five weekly sessions through the winter, travelling across the County for the two-hour sessions.

When we caught up with Sam, this is what he had to say

“The whole course has been excellent, getting my first exposure to filmmaking with experienced filmmakers.

I spoke about it during my recent film production interview with Suffolk Uni, which got me an offer to start in September. Hopefully will help in my next interview on Monday for Colchester. “

We are delighted to report that Sam now has TWO offers of a University place to start in September and is researching the areas before making his final decision.  In the meantime, he will be joining our own professional film maker, acting as “second shooter” for a very special Teens Unite project later this Spring.

The film that the WTBL project team created will be having it’s premier on Friday 5th April at the Wormley Free Church at 7pm.  If you would like to come along and see the work of these talented young, community spirited individuals, please get in touch with Michal on 07903 390649 or email: michal@wtbiglocal.org.uk
